What Exactly Causes Kidney Stones?

A variety of factors can cause them. About 75 per cent of cases showed that they are composed of calcium oxalate. When we eat oxalate, it binds to calcium in our body.

A higher concentration of calcium oxalate in the body results in disturbing the functions of the kidneys, which can’t excrete it fast enough. It starts to crystallise and eventually, kidney stones are formed. Researchers have found that intake of 40-50 mg/day of oxalate in the diet prevents the formation of kidney stones.

Which Foods Are High-Oxylate Foods?

Beets, along with spinach, and Swiss chard are one of the most oxalate-rich foods. This makes them one of the primary foods that cause kidney stones. 100g of beet leaves have 610mg of oxalate.

Juices of these foods are riskier because it takes a lot of fruits or vegetables to make a small amount of juice. It is best to mix up your juices recipes so that you aren’t intaking too much oxalate.

How to Prevent Kidney Stones formation again?

People who had kidney stones in the past have high chances to get them again. In a study, it as observed that 50 per cent of people who got one stone got another within10 years.

  1. Be cautious about oxalate-rich foods, i.e. beets, chocolate, spinach, tea, and nuts.

  3. Watch out for signs of kidney stones, i.e. severe pain in the side of the abdomen accompanied by nausea.
  4. Use sufficient calcium from foods. Avoid using supplements.
  5. Reduce sodium consumption to 1500 mg or less.
